Using Social Networking Websites to Promote Your Business

Customers are good for business. Sometimes businesses forget that – especially when they cut back on their marketing budget. The simple fact of the matter is that customers need to know what products and services you sell in order to buy them from you. If you don’t let them know, then they won’t buy. That’s why it’s so important to continually market and advertise your business.

Most businesses cringe when they think of advertising. This is because all they can think about is how much it costs and not what it can do or how many customers it can bring. Rightly so, because traditional methods of advertising can be very expensive and may not bring in many customers. Welcome to the new millennium.  With the development of new technologies, there are now ways of advertising your products and services without having to spend an arm and a leg.

Are you interested to hear what these new methods are yet? Are you even further interested in hearing that some of these methods are absolutely free?  That’s right.  No cost at all. If you haven’t guessed it by now, then these methods include promoting your business online. While there are many ways of promoting online (some which cost money and some which don’t), one method that’s been increasing in popularity recently is social networking. Most people now belong to at least one social network and their uses are increasing. At the time of this article, Facebook currently has over 900 Million users. Twitter over 250 Million, YouTube over 800 Million, and Google Plus over 150 Million! That’s a lot of people online.

Most people start on social networks because a friend invited them to join. Most people are on social networks, well, to be social. With the growth of these networks though, people and businesses have discovered ways of using them for business. Facebook, Google, LinkedIn have all gone one step further and even allowed Business Pages or Company Profiles. As these networks continue to grow, it’s imperative that you get your business on them and start using them. Otherwise you’re missing out on huge exposure for your business.

Remember one thing before you begin spamming everyone on Social networks about your business though… social networks are first and foremost… social. Most of your interaction with people should be about building relationships and engaging in conversations. In fact, some social networks are completely social and frown upon any kind of business promotion. Also remember that people like to do business with people they know, like, and trust. So when you start building relationships with people and start to get to know them and they get to know you, you might also develop a good enough relationship to walk away with a new client or prospect for your business.

When you join a social network, make sure you’re using your own name and always include a profile picture. Remember, people want to get to know you, not your business (at least not at first). If you are joining multiple social networks, then carry the same message across those networks. Don’t be one person on one network and another on another one. Also, don’t promote multiple businesses, products, or services on different networks, as you’ll confuse people as to what you really do.

Remember that people love to buy things; they just hate to be sold. So you have to be very careful about how you use social networks for promoting your business and products. Even if you are joining a business network like Quora, people still want to know about you. So, make sure you have open and inviting information about yourself and share information about who you are and why people want to work with you – not just your business. The more people are talking about you, the more they’ll talk about your business.

Joining the right social networks can create huge exposure for your business and really help build your brand. When used properly, this should result in more leads and eventually, more customers and sales.
